All grandparents are different. Each culture and each family has different expectations. In many societies grandparents are revered as wise and all-knowing. No more so than a Grandfather, that wise Old Man…
What are your memories of your Grandfather? For many of us it is of the wise old man, a fountain of knowledge, Memories from perhaps childhood, memories of long walks on beaches and wooded paths and him clasping your tiny hands in is large sinewy, wrinkled but strong hand as your trundled along beside him and he would beguile you with stories of the old days and the old days in a time that seemed magic
Or it was the magic he could perform when he suddenly pulled a coin from behind your ear, whoosh… or could make the same coin disappear before your very eyes from his large, sinewy hand.
There’s the memory too of the words of caution or simple advice he gave you one day as you suddenly found yourself on the verge of young adulthood.
Grandfathers can come out with the most fabulously funny, and often clever gems. Listening to the often brilliant deductions they make, and simply hearing their stories is priceless to recall as your journey through this life.
Because he was older than your parents, a Grandfather could always make time for you, even if he had to juggle such time among many other grandchild, your siblings or cousins. Yet he would find time for you, giving his undistracted and full attention to you as if you and this wise old man were the only two people in the world.
Remember, too, how it felt good for to not only have your Mother and Father in your corner cheering you on through life but to also have the love and support of these other special people, their grandparents.
Remember, when you went to visit them and their faces would light up and you would hear, ‘Yea! here!’ and you knew you were going to have a special day with them, and that maybe, just maybe, your Grandfather would do that magic trick again with the disappearing coin and you felt
loved and cherished in a very special way…
Your Grandfather is irreplaceable, a one-off, and when that day came for him to leave you, nothing, you knew, would ever be the same again.
You can treasure the time you had with him, right here and now, by paying Tribute … and preserve special memories of your Grandfather.
On Friends Past, your Tribute will endure for ever and ever …
